June Lohmaier is absolutely devoted to the residents of The Friendly Home. Every single day, seven days a week, she volunteers on the skilled nursing unit. Up until four months ago one of the members here was Mae Linton. June and Mae were longtime friends, and when Mae moved to The Friendly Home, June soon followed. Mae passed away late last year. "It very hard," she says. "Very hard, because we were friends for 57 years. She was like a big sister to me."

But June didn't let grief get in the way of her generosity. After Mae died, June stepped up her volunteer work. June lives at Linden Knoll, right next door. Four and a half hours every day, for lunch and for dinner, she helps prepare the dining room. Each member gets her undivided attention.

"She's heaven sent," says Vicky Sikorski, House Manager of the skilled nursing unit. "She's a very dedicated, caring family member of our unit. I mean we just love her. When she's not here we miss her, and she is a great help to us, she really is."

"I love everybody here," says June. "The staff and the nurses and everybody is so nice to me, it's a pleasure to be here, let's put it that way. If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't be here."

Just as she did with her best friend Mae, June spends time with each of the members. At The Friendly Home, the hugs are never in short supply. June Lohmaier makes sure of it.
