The call came into the Rochester Fire Department shortly after 10 p.m. Rochester Fire Chief John Caufield said the first engine to arrive at 381 Genesee Street discovered flames and heavy smoke on the first and second floors, as well as the attic.
Chief Caufield said no one was inside the abandoned house as the fire spread, and firefighters quickly determined the house was a total loss. The goal became to save the adjacent homes, which were only five feet away on both sides of the burning structure.
It took two alarms and about 35 firefighters to get the fire under control according to Chief Caufield, who said there was no early indication as to what cause it.
