Irondequoit means "where the land and waters meet." Or, for the customers at Ridge Donut Cafe on Portland Avenue, more like - where good food meets great friends!
The shop has been in the Marcello family for 45 years.
"We've been here for 15 years," says Richard Marcello, co-owner. "Before that, we were on Ridge Road East."
The Marcellos have moved the business a few times, but always staying in Irondequoit.
So, what is it about the town?
"That's a good question. I think it's got a little bit of everything here. It's got a good group of people. We've got a lot of regulars in here, and it's been working for us," Richard says.
And for some in Irondequoit, Ridge Donuts is a part of their every day lives.
Raymond Calabro is one of those regulars. Here's at the store every day.
"I come here because I like the people," Calabro says. "I have a lot of friends that come here. So I keep coming back."
Of course, he also comes back for...
"The donuts. They got the best donuts in town."
And while they also have a lunch and light dinner menu, it really is about the donuts.
"Jelly squares are good. Apple fritters are good, and they have specials."
So after all these years, why donuts?
"Well, it's a fun food," says Josephine Marcello, owner of Ridge Donut Cafe. "It's something that you enjoy when you feel stressed. Eat a donut, you feel good!"
And after being in business for more than 4 decades, it must be true.
"People enjoy them. We get more compliments. We've had them go to Iraq and Germany. It's unbelievable. It really is," says Josephine.
Ridge Donut Cafe is located at 1600 Portland Avenue.
