When Canandaigua Academy honored graduate John Bills for his achievements in opera, they were hoping the famous tenor would perform for them.

But bills was to ill to take the stage, and he asked that a student sing in his place instead.

That student? Colin Roth. He sang Ave Maria.

"We thought that Colin would give a wonderfully moving performance, which he did, he brought the audience to tears," says Canandaigua Academy Vocal Music Teacher Amy Story. "It was at that moment that I really felt that one of the things I wanted to make sure happened was that Colin Roth was nominated for a Scholastic Arts Spotlight award."

Colin's talent is as solid as his character. This senior has been selected for both state and national honor choirs. He received a perfect score for his all state solo. "I got 100 on it." says Colin. "I was really proud of that. When I found out about that I was really surprised actually, but it was definitely a memorable experience."

Colin is also active in musical theater. He won Best Leading Actor in a Musical, in the Stars of Tomorrow Competition at the Rochester Broadway Theater League. He plans on studying math and economics in college, but the lure of music and singing will always draw him in.
