It's not what you would normally think of as fuel for your car. Propane is what many of us use to power grills. But now, Monroe County is using it this way, to save.

"We got these trucks last December and have been working on the infrastructure getting everything together and this is where we are right now," says Melvin Rose, the Fleet Manager for Monroe County.

Four trucks are now using liquid propane. They were sent away to be retrofitted. They have a tank in the back. The fuel is cold and special gloves have to be worn. Those who use the truck have been specially trained.

"This one is dedicated to the airport. It's a support vehicle for the field it goes out and checks the runways so it gets used 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It's a real busy unit," Rose adds.

Because of this project, 5,100 gallons of gasoline won't be used by the county each year. The county is expecting to save not only energy but a lot of money. "The price. It's a dollar less a gallon and that's a big part of it. Better carbon footprint. Amazing fuel runs a lot cleaner," says Rose.

The project was paid for with a $92,000 grant from NYSERDA. It's one of many ways the county's fleet of vehicles is "green". Recently the county was ranked the 2nd best government green fleet in North America.
