Wings Roll Past Yanks

Kevin Slowey pitched eight solid innings, as the Red Wings defeated the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 6-2 Saturday night at Frontier Field before a crowd of 11,436. The teams meet again in a 6:35 p.m. contest Sunday night.

The game did not start the way Slowey would have liked. Scranton's lead off batter Kevin Russo hit a lazy fly ball to center field for what should have been the first out of the inning, but Wings centerfielder Rene Tosoni lost the ball in the sun, allowing Russo to reach base. Jesus Montero gave the Yankees the early 1-0 lead with an RBI-single down the right field line.

Rochester answered in the bottom half of the inning with help from Jeff Bailey and Aaron Bates. Back-to-back walks to Mike Hollimon and Brian Dinkelman put two runners on with one out. Bailey singled down to left field tying the game at one. Two batters later, Bailey's RBI single with two outs gave Rochester a 2-1 advantage.

The Wings got on the board again in the second inning when Rene Rivera ripped a 1-1 pitch deep to left for his fourth home run of the year.

Toby Gardenhire singled and Rivera was hit by pitch putting runners on first and second with one out in the fourth. Gardenhire then advanced to third on a ground out to second by Tosoni. With two outs and runners on first and third, Hollimon dribbled a slow roller up the third base line scoring Gardenhire from third.

Rivera brought home another run in the seventh, when his sacrifice fly to left plated Bates to make it 6-1.

After giving up an unearned run in the first inning, Slowey settled down to throw seven straight scoreless innings.

Mike Lamb hit a solo homer off Kyle Waldrop in the ninth inning.
