Rochester starter Thomas Diamond gave up a triple with one out in the first inning and a ground out by Valdez, gave Syracuse an early 1-0 lead. Diamond returned to the hill in the second inning and allowed only one hit before getting the next three batters out.
With the bases loaded in the third inning, Valdez lofted a long fly ball to left field. Dustin Martin leaped near the wall and got his glove on the ball, but it bounced off Martin's leather and over the wall for a slam. Replays showed the ball might have gone over the wall anyway.
The Wings then called the pen and Dusty Hughes into action. Hughes, who inherited one base runner, walked his first batter and then gave up a single allowing another Syracuse run to score. The Chiefs batted around having a six-run third inning.
Diamond walked two and had six earned runs in his two innings of work
After being no hit through two innings Toby Gardenhire led the third inning off for Rochester with a double. Brandon Roberts also doubled with one out scoring Gardenhire making the score 7-1 Syracuse.
Chuck James came into pitch for Rochester in the fourth inning. James got a quick first out before giving up two walks and a double to load the bases. The Chiefs added to their lead on a sacrifice fly giving them an 8-1 lead. James ended the inning with a strikeout.
With one out in the fourth inning Rochester put men on the corners thanks to back-to-back errors made by Syracuse. The Wings took advantage scoring another run on a Chase Lambin sacrifice fly. The inning ended with the Wings trailing 8-2.
Jim Hoey came in to relieve James for the Wings in the sixth inning. Hoey walked his first batter of the inning but worked out of trouble popping the next batter up and inducing a double play to end the inning. In the seventh, Jesus Flores clubbed a 2-0 Hoey pitch into the Chiefs' bullpen in left field, giving Syracuse a 9-2 lead.
The Wings used their fifth pitcher of the game in the eighth inning, calling Carlos Gutierrez out of the pen to relieve Hoey. Gutierrez had a four batter, hitless inning and remained in the game for the ninth inning where he worked a 1-2-3 inning.
