Wings Bats Quiet Again In Loss To Hens

Updated: June 14, 2011

The Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Rochester Red Wings, 2-1, on Monday night at Fifth Third Field. Andy Oliver (5-4) was effectively wild, walking five Red Wings, yet earned the win after striking out nine and allowing just one run (unearned) in 6.0 innings. Omir Santos went 1-3 but his sole hit was a double that drove in the go-ahead run.

The Red Wings (24-37) took a 1-0 lead over the Mud Hens (29-37) in the second inning thanks to the excellent plate discipline exhibited by their hitters. Oliver walked the first two batters he faced in the inning and the third batter advanced when a low line drive bounced off Oliver's glove for an error. Oliver then walked the fourth batter of the inning to walk in the game's first run.

To get out of the inning, Oliver caught a soft line drive from Steve Holm and threw to third for a double play.

Toledo surged in the fourth and tied things up at 1-1 when Ryan Strieby doubled and was promptly doubled home by Scott Thorman. Santos handed the Hens the 2-1 lead when he stroked a double that scored Thorman. Santos' two-bagger was the Mud Hens' third of the frame.

Excellent pitching from the bullpen helped the Mud Hens close out with a victory in Monday's contest. RHP Brendan Wise, LHP Matt Hoffman and RHP Lester Oliveros combined to work the game's final three innings and allowed a total of just two hits.

The Mud Hens will play Rochester one final time at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before departing for a six-game road trip. The Hens return home for a six-game homestand against Columbus and Louisville on June 22-27.
