Inside Brenda Mashiotta's 5th grade science class at Northwood Elementary, students are learning all about the world around them.

"During our ecology unit we talk about human impact on the earth and it fit really well into learning about recycling and things we can do to take care of environment and make positive difference on environment," Mashiotta says.

They are taking part in the Disney Planet Challenge. They are coming up with new and unique ways to help out their school and the planet.

"They ended up making about 9 teams where they are working from energy saving, water saving, recycling, they opened a new to you center and we are going to start a composting program here at Northwood as well. There's a whole bunch of different things they can be a big part of," Mashiotta adds.

The recycling team has gotten the whole school involved.

"We give everyone recycling bins that didn't have them and we are recycling for the whole building. We take recyclables and put them by the door so that the people can take them," says 5th grader Kaitlyn Donahue. "We've been recycling cardboard, glass, aluminum cans, and paper," she adds.

One of the projects students have been working on is the "new to you reuse center" where students and staff can bring in old items from home and then they find new homes with other people.

"We thought instead of buying new things we could trade stuff so you could bring stuff in and take stuff back," says 5th grader Nick Cessna. The center has been a big hit so far. "It saves lots of stuff from going in the landfill," Cessna adds.

In total, 41 5th graders are taking part in different "green" projects. "The students are just doing a wonderful job. It's just really nice to see them evolve and feeling so important that they really are doing great things for the environment. I am so proud of them," Mashiotta says.
