Help For Homeowners With Green Improvements

The cold weather is here and there is no better time to make energy improvements to your home.  There is now a statewide program that will help defer the costs for some homeowners.  Our crews visited a home on Rochester's West side.  It is typical of many older homes.  There's not a lot of insulation and inside it's chilly.  But, thanks to the "green jobs, green NY" program, the house and it's owners are getting some help.

Damian Hodkinson of True Energy Solutions says, "
green jobs green NY is a new program that just came out two weeks ago. and what it does, it opens up financing for homeowners to do energy efficient upgrades to their home."

There have been other programs around for years that help out homeowners.  But, there is now a new component that offers low interest loans and free energy audits to those who meet the income requirements.

"We actually physically test everything.  We do what's called a blower door test where we pull air out of the house and look to see exactly where you have air infiltration or heat loss. We work with thermal imaging throughout the whole house, see how insulation is functioning," says Hodkinson.   He helped come up with the plan.

"It's a great time to be doing this.  We've never had incentives quite this good and energy costs are always going up, so," he says.  This program is so new, many people don't even know about it yet.

"it's virtually unknown. It's a little bit of a shame because a lot of homeowners when they do find out about it they are coming to us iwth high energy bills, trouble paying them really uncomfortable in their house.  If they knew this program existed they would have taken care of it years ago. But, now with extra incentives it's a good idea right now to take advantage of it.
