Another Republican has stepped forward to challenge Chuck Schumer for his seat in the U.S. Senate.
Jay Townsend is running on the Conservative line and hopes to win the Republican nomination in the U.S. Senate race.
Townsend lives in Orange County and worked in politics in his early career. He later ran a market research and consulting firm. Townsend says he may be unknown and have less political capital than Schumer but he says it's a race he's willing to tackle. "I recall 12 years ago when Senator Schumer announced his candidacy and everybody said 'There's no way you're going to beat Al D'Amato' but he did."
Townsend says he is against tax hikes, unfunded mandates and does not agree with the economic stimulus plan. He will face Republican Gary Berntsen, a former CIA officer, in the Republican primary.
