High in the Bristol Hills is a place called Sky Lodge. The shell of this building has been here for more than 80 years. But recently some new owners polished this hidden gem.
"It was the only right way to do things. It's the way my wife has always done things and it made sense," says owner Tom Kopf.
He is talking about going green. When he and his wife Julie decided to take on this project. The environment was a top priority.
"We want to own this place for the long haul and it certainly made a big difference in what the energy costs would have been already just through this past winter," he adds.
Some of the green features include soy based spray foam insulation. They've also tried to re-use as much wood as possible and the cast iron handles and hinges are also original.
Not only are many parts of this building green, but much of the furniture was reclaimed as well. Including the bed frames. "That was an apple tree that was by our pond that had fallen down and it was right about the time we were furnishing the place and we said, that would be perfect for it."
And the green touches continue outside too. There are organic herbs and vegetables for guests to enjoy. "The lawn care is all organic. We wanted people to fee completely comfortable letting children run and play and eating the food and enjoying the place," says Julie Kopf.
The lodge is rented out for vacations and corporate retreats. They've even hosted a few "green" weddings. This was the Kopf's labor of love for more than two years. And now they're anxious to share it.
"People really have made a lot of comments about it. It's been very satisfying," she adds.
