When soldiers come home from war, they have plenty of skills, but it's often difficult to transfer those skills into civilian jobs. New bipartisan legislation would help combat that problem.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand unveiled the proposal Friday afternoon in Rochester. She says its a moral responsibility to make sure service members have a job to come home to.
The Veterans Employment Act of 2010 would help do that by expanding the post 9-11 GI Bill to get soldiers into worker training programs. It would also create a small business program, provide resources to transition war skills into work skills, and help get veterans into green jobs.
"There are so few jobs that are available, so that's why the retraining is necessary to move our veterans, with their fantastic skill sets, into growing industries," said Sen. Gillibrand.
Gillibrand hopes to get the legislation passed in the next couple of months and get it included in the jobs program that is under consideration in Congress.
