The Maplewood Library is a great place for kids to read, but Healthy Hero Rosalie Mangino-Crandall saw the opportunity for something more.

"My kids were in that age range and I wanted to find some opportunities for them to be active and I couldn't really find any in the immediate neighborhood so I decided to start a program," said Rosalie.

She created a summer program and a weekly pre-school program during the school year for active neighborhood play at the library and nearby park. Mangino-Crandall raised money to buy play equipment and healthy snacks for all the neighborhood kids. She also trained 19 volunteers to teach the children activities like tag and yoga.

"We really wanted to teach them to be active on their own, independently as well as in a group so that when they left the program they could keep being active if they wanted to."

The program is suspended at the park right now, but Mangino-Crandall hopes to bring it to more of the rural places in Genesee County and back to the park here in Rochester. In the meantime, she continues to keep up her battle as a Healthy Hero.

"I have to continue myself to focus on eating healthy and trying to make physical activity a priority its a difficult thing, and I do try to do that and I would like to continue to try and improve there."
