Teaching kids how to be active and healthy.

That's the main goal of Rochester's Healthy Hero Campaign, which kicked off Sunday morning at Frontier Field.

"They're the world to me so everything is about the kids," said parent Jerome Smith.

Parents here at Frontier Field are teaching their kids to be physically fit.

"They have to grow up and be healthy heros. Right little man? Right, " Smith said.

It's part of the "Be a Healthy Hero" campaign.

It's a partnership between the Greater Rochester Health Foundation and the YMCA.

"It's important to give them an opportunity to take a break, step away, and have an opportunity to play and have fun together but also to get valuable information about nutrition and physical activity and the things that they can do to live healthier," said Mary Kay Walrath, a YMCA representative.

"We get out in the fresh air and run around and it's really great that the kids get to participate in all these great activities here at Frontier Field today," Parent Ed Russell said.

From tag to tennis--Sunday's event to kick off healthy hero week included interactive games for kids to play, and even an inflatable obstacle course.

"If you make physical activity fun, they don't even realize they're doing something healthy, they are just having a great time," Walrath said.

Holding the event on May 2nd 2010 is no coincidence.

The five-two-one-zero campaign has been running all year. It emphasizes five fruits and veggies a day, no more than two hours of tv or computer time, at least one hour of active play and zero sweetened drinks.

Its a rule of thumb that everyone can live by.

"It's not just a day for only kids, or only adults. It's something that's really designed to engage all members of a family together," Walrath said.

NEWS 8 and FOX Rochester are proud sponsors of the "Be a Healthy Hero Campaign".
