We received a wonderful letter about this week's News 8 Golden Apple Award winner. A father and his son asked us to surprise Fifth Grade Teacher Susan Sorriero at Rochester School Number-45. Ms. Sorriero believes you can't teach kids unless you know them. That goes for parents too. Miguel Orengo is a single parent raising his son Miguel Junior. He says Ms. Sorriero understands the hard work. Susan says that's because she experienced it herself. "Actually my parents divorced when I was younger, so I understand what it's like to have a one parent family."
School No.45 Principal Shirley Green says Susan Sorriero knows what's going on with each one of her students and their families. "She is such a committed teacher. She works hard, she engages her children."
Miguel Junior says "The best thing about her is she never gives up on me and she keeps trying and trying and trying with me."
"I love the students" says Susan. "Everyday it's something different it's never boring. This is like the best thing that's ever happened."
Susan Sorriero is a News 8 Golden Apple Award winner. You can read the letter we got from Miguel and his father below.
Dear channel 8,
Golden Apple Award has given students and parents the opportunity to show teachers how much they are valued and appreciated. It's with great honor that my son and I would like to nominate Susan Sorriero for a Golden Apple Award. A devoted hard working teacher who puts education first instead of all the propaganda that comes with being a teacher and with the City School District.
It's hard being a teacher these days with all the pay cuts and with all the violence in our school, but she still takes the time to care and make sure that our kids get the education they deserve. it's been an honor to work with such a great teacher this year, not only does she teaches my son, but understands the hard work of being a single parent.
She has worked amazingly with my son and me during our good and bad times. She has gone beyond her call of duty and is very deserving of such a great honor.
In conclusion, I believe that Susan Sorriero a hard working, devoted and amazing teacher is a great candidate for the Golden Apple Award. Not only should the City school District be proud of having such a wonderful teacher working for them, but also for school #45.
Sincerely,
Miguel Orengo & Miguel Orengo Jr.
