We get a lot of letters asking us to surprise a teacher with a News 8 Golden Apple Award. We want to share one from a student honoring Brockport High School Music Teacher Darla Bair. Ms. Bair started teaching music in 1975. She's been in Brockport 24 years.
Sophomore Lizzi Carpenter says Ms. Bair has inspired her to pursue a career in music. Darla's passion for teaching is all about that moment when kids get it.
"I love seeing the light-bulb go on over their heads when something finally clicks," said Darla.
And whether the lesson is music or life, Darla says it's all important.
"Everything we do we have to be careful and think it through and help them be the best people they can be. And that's not just music and social studies, that's thinking about the love and caring about the kids."
Darla Bair is a News 8 Golden Apple Award Winner. You can read Lizzi's letter nominating her below.
Dear Channel 8,
Even though she's "just" a music teacher, she always ends up teaching more than that. She teaches us music, English and history, all in one class.
When I leave Brockport High School, I aspire to go to college to become a music teacher. I've grown in just the past year so much as a musician thanks to her. I want to have a positive influence on my students when I grow up. I want to be a trusted person in the lives of students as Miss.Bair is for so many of us.
She deserves to be awarded for being the great teacher she is. As long as I live, I'll always be able to share a story or a life lesson I learned from Miss.Bair.
Sincerely,
Lizzi Carpenter
