Wings Bats Still Cold

The Syracuse Chiefs edged the Rochester Red Wings, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. Alexi Casilla walked twice, scored a run and had a single for the Wings. The winning run came in the top of the seventh inning when Chiefs first baseman Chip Cannon hit a lead-off double, and scored two batters later when Wayne Lydon hit a sacrifice fly to center. It didnt take long for the teams to get the other four runs. The first inning started a little rough for Wings starter Heath Totten as Chiefs catcher Curtis Thigpen hit into a fielders choice, he reached third after Adam Lind hit a double into left. Luna followed by hitting a sharp grounder to second. Casilla threw home to get Thigpen and catcher Eli Whiteside whipped the ball to third but Lind slid under the tag. Lind scored after Robinzon Diaz hit a single into right field. Russ Adams followed with a hit ball that caromed off Casillas glove that scored Luna, making the score 2-0. Rochester answered right back in the bottom of the inning. After a lead-off walk by Casilla and a single by Jason Pridie that advanced him to third. Casilla scored after a Brian Buscher ground out to second. Garrett Jones hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Pridie, tying the score at 2. Mariano Gomez came in for Totten in the fourth inning after Totten allowed one earned run and four hits. He also struck out four and didnt walk any batters. Gomez pitched three scoreless innings and retired the side in two of those innings. He allowed only one hit. After Ricky Barrett (1-1) relieved Gomez, he allowed a lead-off double to Cannon. He came home when, two batters later, Wayne Lydon hit a fly ball to center putting Syracuse up, 3-2. Casey Daigle came in for the top of the ninth and allowed one hit to finish the game. Chiefs starter David Purcey (2-0) came out after throwing seven innings, allowing only two runs and striking out seven Wings. He was relieved by Tracy Thorpe who pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first save. He struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth. NOTES: Double-A New Britain OF Dustin Martin had four more hits Saturday, and leads all of Minor League Baseball with a .619 average (13-for-21) entering play Sunday. Ft. Myers Miracle (Florida State League) RHP Rob Delaney (left) is the Twins Minor League Player of the Week for April 5-11...Delaney, 23, was 0-0, 0.00 (6.0 ip, 0 er), allowing three hits with one walk and three strikeouts, while converting all three of his save opportunities during the week...Delaney was signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent, June 19, 2006....Former Red Wing Doug Deeds, traded to the Cubs organization on Friday, hit a two-run pinch-hit homer in his first at-bat for Double-A Tennessee on Saturday. Deeds hpmer came in the first game of a doubleheader; in the second game, Deeds drove in two more runs with a single.
