(Washington, DC) -- President Bush is saddened by the Eliot Spitzer story and is praying for the Spitzer family. So said White House Press Secretary Dana Perino in her daily briefing. Saying he has begun atoning for his private failings, New York Governor Spitzer has resigned from office effective Monday. Spitzer's alleged involvement in a prostitution ring came to light earlier this week. Democrat Spitzer apologized for not living up to what was expected of him and for the impact his actions have had on New Yorkers and his family.
Perino said President Bush looks forward to working with David Paterson, who will be the new governor on Monday. Democrat Paterson, New York's lieutenant governor, will become the state's first black governor.
