It has shocked even Governor Spitzer's biggest critics and tonight many are calling for his resignation, including Republican Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks.

"If he really is sincere in his belief that this should be about that state of NY then Eliot Spitzer should step aside,” said Brooks. L-EVANGOPREACTIONbrooks2008-03-11-1205245367.jpg

"This is a black eye on New York State and a black eye on the democrat party it’s a tragedy but something that certainly could have been avoided,” said Minarik.

Monroe County Republican Chair Steve Minarik agrees with Brooks that in the face of this scandal Spitzer has no choice but to resign. Minarik believes the news today equals political death for Spitzer's career.

"Is it the final nail in the coffin, I would say this is a pretty big nail in the coffin,” said Minarik.

Democratic Mayor Bob Duffy was in Albany this afternoon when the news broke. He says the mood was somber. He will not say whether he believes Spitzer should resign, but does say it would tough for him to move on in light of the accusations.

"I think given what I have heard it would be virtually impossible to continue,” said Duffy.

“But would you support him if he continued?” asked News 8 Now’s Matt Molloy.

“I would say this, I cannot support anything that would be inappropriate so I'm going to wait and see until the facts come out,” Duffy responded.

Duffy was in Albany giving presentations on a number of Rochester projects when the news broke, those were cut short this afternoon. Another trip to Albany for Duffy scheduled for tomorrow has since been cancelled.
