(New York, NY) -- Eliot Spitzer is stepping down as New York's Governor. Spitzer made the long-anticipated announcement this morning with his wife Silda at his side. Spitzer said his resignation will take effect next Monday, March 17th, at the request of Lieutenant Governor David Paterson, who will take over as the state's new leader. The resignation completes a stunning freefall for Spitzer, who swept into office last year with nearly 70-percent of the vote, but now leaves after being linked to a high-priced prostitution ring.
In a brief statement before television cameras and a packed room full of reporters, the Democratic Governor said he has begun atoning for his private failings, and is deeply sorry he didn't live up to that was expected of him. He also apologized for his actions and the impact they've had on his family and all New Yorkers.
Spitzer said he is thankful for the compassion of his wife and family and hopes to work for the public good as he enters private life. He spent all day yesterday pondering his future while holed up in his posh Manhattan apartment as calls came from both Democrats and Republicans for his resignation.
New York Republicans said they were ready to move ahead with articles of impeachment if Spitzer didn't resign today.
Spitzer's undoing began Sunday when reports surfaced linking him to the Emperor's Club, a high-priced escort service that served as a front for prostitution. It's estimated that Spitzer spent as much as 80-thousand-dollars on high priced call girls over the last decade.
