ELIMINATESROA2008-03-03-1204563399.jpgWayne County parents and school leaders gathered today to figure out new ways to save what they called a "critical" program slated to be cut. Governor Eliot Spitzer plans to eliminate the school resource officers program. Under the program, a trained state trooper is placed on campus to provide law enforcement and counseling.

Saturday parents and teachers gathered at Wayne Central High School to discuss some ways to save the program. Experts say the SRO program is a successful crime prevention tool and it's too critical to be cut.

“It is unconscionable that Governor Spitzer is seeking to eliminate the School Officer Resource Program that has prevented violence, prevented crime, prevented crime from happening in the first place," says NY Senator Michael Nozzolio (R-54th District)

Last year, school resource officers responded to 2500 calls including sexual offenses and bomb threats statewide.
