SPECIALOLYMPICS2008-02-11-1202755793.jpgThe 2008 Special Olympic Winter Games are now well underway in Rochester.

Several events were held Saturday at three venues across our area, including "Olympic Village" and floor hockey at the dome center in Henrietta. News 8 Now caught up with the coach of the Fingerlakes Sabres, who says though his team ended up in fourth place they have already won.

"My players have come a long way in a long time....with a lot of hard work they accomplished getting into division one they deserve every bit of what they've got," says coach Steven Marshall.

About 1000 athletes in all are competing in the events, which also include skiing, snowshoeing and figure skating. Five hundred local volunteers are helping to make the event a success. News 8 Now and Fox Rochester are proud sponsors of the Special Olympics Winter Games. Sunday, at noon, hundreds of brave souls, including our own chief meteorologist Scott Hetsko, will run into the freezing waters of Lake Ontario in the "Polar Plunge" which will raise thousands of dollars for the Special Olympics.
