Javon McCrea and Tyshun Stevens combined for 40 points as Newark held off Canandaigua and remained perfect after a 74-65 win at Canandaigua Friday night. Connor Henderson led the Braves with 27 points in a losing effort. A Kaheem Gist layup pulled Canandaigua within three points with three minutes to go, but McCrea was fouled putting back his own miss, pushing the lead back to five. On the next possession, Jace Havrilla drilled a three from the corner and the Reds (19-0) made free throws from there to clinch the win. Canandaigua falls to 16-4. The same two schools matched girls teams at Newark. Shakista Woolfolk injured her knee early in the game and did not score, leaving the Reds shorthanded. Still, Newark trailed by only two after three quarters before Canandaigua pulled away to win 52-43. The Braves finish the regular season a perfect 20-0. Ashley Zahn led the Braves with 18 points while Kim Gordon chipped in 12. Alyssa Fenyn led Newark (16-3) with 20 points. The matchup of the night in Monroe County was at Rush-Henrietta. The Lady Royal Comets avenged an overtime loss to Penfield with a 61-50 win at home Friday night. Shenise Johnson fouled out of the earlier contest on a controversial fourth quarter technical. Friday night, she posted her 17th double-double of the season with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Erica Yohannes led the Patriots with 19 points. Both teams are now 15-3. Aquinas won the rematch of the top two Catholic schools in Section Five, 60-51. Tyler Patterson led three Lil' Irish in double figures with 16. Roderick Gray scored 25 points for Kearney (13-5). Aquinas improves to 11-5. Athena and Arcadia met for Greece bragging rights in both girls and boys basketball. The girls game came down to the very end. Athena led by four with a minute left, but Kristen Powers hit a three to pull the Lady Titans within one. After a pair of Trojan free throws, Jessica Sexton was fouled making a layup, but missed the free throw and the margin was again one. Two more Athena free throws increased the lead to three and Arcadia's NaQuasha Britton missed a desperation three pointer that would have tied at the buzzer. Nicole Bini led Athena (10-7) with 20 points. Arcadia (12-6) played without starting guard Jessica Shufelt who missed the game with an injury. The boys game was not as exciting. Kourtney Goff scored 19 points while MIke Palermo and Brian Benson combined for 24 more as the Athena got by Arcadia 65-47. The Trojans (16-2) are the top seed in next week's Monroe County Tournament. Arcadia finishes 6-12.
