Workers were removing old equipment from a room with a cutting torch. The fire broke out when the torch came into contact with titanium. Firefighters used soda-ash to put out the fire because water could have caused a chemical reaction with the flames. One firefighter was treated for minor burns. There were no other injuries.
"I think just because of the scale of what was going on it could have been a lot worse than what it turned out to be," said Jeff Schillaci of the Silver Springs Fire Department.
About 160 people work at the plant. Everyone on the afternoon shift was sent home.
Flames damaged a room that isn't used.
