North Farmington residents divided over septic woes

The problem started more than two years ago when homeowners at Stone Wood Estates found out there was a problem with the septic system. “I'm upset that we had to wait for two years to get in,” said homeowner Virginia Signorelli.

Signorelli found out about the problem just as she and her husband were about to buy. “The week that we were supposed to close on this house they did a stop work order because they found when they tested the system. I don’t know if it was at this house or one of the other houses. The septics weren’t working properly so they stopped the work on our house which was three days from being closed on,” said Signorelli.

Ryan closed on her house but didn’t move in until this past December. Ryan Homes stepped up to correct the problem. They began pumping septic systems every two weeks. The developer A&D Development began laying a sewer line from the Stone Wood to Loomis Road where it'll connect with the existing public sewer system. But that project hit a snag after some residents raised concerns about these wetlands.. “They were trying to put the sewer line through the wetlands here, it is a wetlands area, Cathy stopped ‘em,” said Farmington resident John Pfeifer.

Farmington resident Cathy Zollweg and others raised questions about the project. But the Department of Environmental Conservation ruled the project could move forward. In fact the DEC sent out a letter in January informing residents that the project here does indeed meet standards aimed at protecting the wetlands along Weigert Road. That's good news for Signorelli who just wants to put the sewer problem behind her. “I just hope that it gets solved soon,” added Signorelli.
