WATERLOORUMORS2008-01-14-1200335248.jpgThe superintendent at Waterloo schools wants to reassure parents their children are safe and secure in classes Monday.

More than half the members of the student body at Waterloo middle and high schools didn't show up or left early after hearing someone was bringing a gun to school. Superintendent Terry MacNabb says he blames rumors that spread through text messages, and he says those rumors have been unfounded by police.

MacNabb did ask police to be on school grounds at the start of the school day to ensure the students' safety, but he says that was nothing more than a pre-cautionary measure.
