Catholic Diocese considering closing schools

Updated: January 11, 2008

bishop-clark2008-01-11-1200062169.JPGRochester Catholic Bishop Matthew Clark is considering recommendations about preserving Catholic education in the Diocese of Rochester. The proposal: closing schools.

A task force appointed in November has completed it's work.  They have found that there has been a 50 percent decline in enrollment over the past decade, tuition costs have gone up and parochial funding is declining.  For example, according to a letter from the Bishop, there is a deficit of more than $1 million in the Monroe County Catholic Schools System alone.

The task force studied many options including closing and consolidating Catholic schools. There is no time line announced for the Bishop to announce his final decision.
