McDONALDSVs.STARBUCKS2008-01-07-1199751042.jpgIn August 2006, we reported Rochester area McDonald's Restaurants were experimenting with specialty coffee drinks. After months of testing and research the company says they'll offer lattes and capuccinno at 14,000 of its restaurants nationwide.

"Our customers in Rochester are very good at telling us exactly how they feel," said Richard Guon, owner and operator of three McDonald's restaurants in the area. He says Rochester customers played a major role in the coffee decision. "The numbers came in better than we thought. Acceptance of the product to the customer was outstanding." The company is conducting test runs in six cities including Rochester. "It's here to stay. It's going to grow. It's a very important part of our business for the future," said Guon.

Sandi Erklenz watches her grandson Duncan on Mondays. She says they go to McDonald's for lunch a lot, "I think it's a great idea especially for those of us going around with little children because then you have the option of getting something you'll really enjoy and the kids are happy. Where at Starbucks there's nothing to do."

Eddie Wlonoski agrees. "I think competition is always good. If I was here getting lunch I'd probably would try a specialty coffee."

For now, the test runs continue. McDonald's plans to introduce new beverage products throughout 2008. The new McCafe's will be located right at the front counter. Many of the local McDonald's are under construction to move in the coffee equipment.
