County Budget Passed

By: WROC TV News 8 Now
Updated: December 12, 2007
The Monroe County Legislature, in a 17-12 vote along party lines, approved the 2008 County budget as proposed by County Executive Maggie Brooks.

Included in the budget is a $28-million dollar reduction in sales tax revenue which had previously been shared with suburban school districts.

An 11th hour amendment by Minority Democrats proposed to restore the money to the schools, through the levy of an additional tax on residents of towns who do not have police departments, and who rely primarily on the County Sheriff's Department for public safety.

However, the amendment was not even voted on after the Legislature President accepted the opinion of the County Attorney that the plan, as proposed by Democrats, would be "illegal".
