“We've had people talking about this issue for two or three years,” said Holley Mayor John Kenney. Now voters finally get a chance to determine the fate of their police department. Residents went to the polls today to decide whether to abolish the nine man Police Department and turn over policing duties to the Orleans County Sheriffs Department and the State Police. Kenney says if abolished it could have a big impact on police response time. “The idea of response time the amount of i call it aide that is given by and to the county sheriffs department state police and our own village department it has to be thought through very carefully,” said Kenney. That's exactly why resident John Towne voted to keep the department. “I would not want to make a call that i need the police and have to wait for the state police or the Orleans County Sheriff to come in at least here in Holley they’re here. so I'd like to keep them here,” said Towne. Some residents believe a vote to abolish the police department could help homeowners save on their property taxes. “Iif it turns out that you have a hundred thousand dollar home in the village the work that we've done shows that you're going to probably save one dollar on the tax rate per thousand dollars," said Kenney. Currently the village spend about 200-thousand dollars to run it's police department. Kenney says the villages total budgte is about 800-thousand dollars. Back in 1983 the village held a similar vote to keep the agency.
