GATESINDUSTRIALFIREA2007-12-02-1196644962.jpgThe cold weather caused a delay for firefighters trying to put out a major fire in Gates Sunday morning.  Crews arrived at 80 Pixley Industrial Park shortly before 6 a.m. responding to an automatic fire alarm at McDonald Springs Inc. When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the building and heavy fire from the roof.

A frozen fire hydrant hampered crews from fighting the fire but they were able to bring the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

"As the snow starts to fly this time of year, were asking people if they could still do the best they can to shovel fire hydrants so that they make it accessible for us to streamline our operations,” says Chief Jim Harrington of the Gates Fire Department.

One firefighter was being treated at Unity Hospital for a stress-related injury. The fire is under investigation but is believed to have started accidentally. McDonald Springs Inc. has been in business in Gates since 1983 and specializes in truck installation and repair. The building will need to be inspected before the business is allowed to reopen.
