A head on crash in Livingston County has left a local Special Olympian with serious injuries.
The accident happened around 9:45 Tuesday morning on state Route 39 near Nations Road in the Town of Geneseo.
The Livingston County Sheriff's Office reports the vehicle driven by Eric Byrd, 26, of Geneseo, drifted over into the southbound lane and collided with a semi truck.
Emergency crews had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate Byrd from his vehicle. He was taken by Mercy Flight helicopter to Strong Hospital, where he's currently listed in guarded condition.
The semi truck, owned by Genesee Reserve Supply of Rochester, was operated by Dean Johnson. Johnson was not hurt.
In October, Byrd competed in the Special Olympic World Games in Shanghai, China. He has been involved in Special Olympics for six years. He trains and competes in several sports, including volleyball, basketball and aquatics. Aquatics was what he competed in the World Games.
