The Wayne County man convicted of killing his wife by sending her over a cliff in the family minivan could be a free man soon.
In July, an appeals court reduced Walter Casper's conviction from murder to manslaughter, citing "insufficient evidence." Today, Chief Justice Judith Kaye from the state's highest court upheld that decision.
Casper was originally found guilty of second-degree murder in September of 2000 in the death of his wife Catherine. Casper claimed he pulled over in Naples to relieve himself and forgot to put the van in park.
Casper is currently serving a 25-year to life sentence, but re-sentencing on manslaughter charges could have him released on parole soon. So far, no sentencing date has been set.
