CHILDLITERACYPROGRAMA2007-11-14-1195081150.jpgMore than half of adults in the City of Rochester have trouble reading. Rochester Mayor Bob Duffy says it's a crisis...and the City's doing something about it.  Wednesday Duffy announced a plan to make Rochester to the most literate mid-sized city in the country.

57 percent of adults in Rochester can only read at a sixth grade level or below, and to change that, he's launched a literacy initiative in city schools. The mayor wants more kids to enroll in pre-K programs, a partnership between area universities and city schools and a family literacy program at the Rochester Public Library.

"If we do our job correctly those children that sang beautifully for us today, they will be college graduates, they will be doctors, lawyers, elected officials, agency heads, presidents of universities and colleges, CEOs, those kids, their success really depends on what we do and what we do today," said Duffy.

WROC is participating in the mayor's literacy initiative.
