Two Western NY soldiers killed in Iraq

war-iraq2007-11-07-1194450911.jpgThe Department of Defense is investigating the death of two soldiers from western New York serving in Iraq. Twenty-three-year-old Sergeant Daniel J. Shaw of West Seneca, Erie County, died November 5 in Taji, Iraq, military officials said. Shaw was assigned to the First Battalion, Ninth Infantry Regiment, Second Brigade Combat Team, Second Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado. Another soldier from Western New York also made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Iraq. The DOD reports 20-year-old Private First Class Dwane Covert died when a bomb went off at a military construction site over the weekend. Covert -- a native of Tonawanda-- was assigned to the 104th Transportation Company out of Fort Benning, Georgia.
