Race to the polls draws near

This is the last weekend before voters head to the polls on Tuesday. At stake here in Monroe County, control of the County Legislature. Republicans currently hold 17 seats. Democrats hold 12. 14 of those seats are considered up for grabs. One of the biggest issues that could effect voter turnout, the County Executives FAIR Plan that funnels money away from suburban school to pay for Medicaid.
With just three days to go, candidates are taking the message to the streets. In East Rochester 10th district Republican Candidate Anthony Danieli went door to door with Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn by his side. And in Webster 8th District Democratic candidate Carmen Gumina introduced himself to voters.
“Decisions are made in this 72 hour period, so we can't encourage you enough to go out and really deliver these victories for us on Tuesday,” said Maggie Brooks, Monroe County Executive.
Right now Republicans control the County Legislature with 17 seats, Democrats hold 12, but 14 of those seats are up for grabs.
“The message is that for too long we've had county government in the hands of a group of people who have done nothing to deal with the scandals at the Water Authority who've done nothing to deal with fundamental financial issues facing the county,” said Joe Morelle, Democratic Committee Chairman.
“Republicans need to remember that we provide low cost government low taxes and we care about the safety of every individual in this community and I don't think Eliot Spitzer and the Democrats in the County Legislature do,” said Steve Minarik, Republican Committee Chairman.
One issue Democrats are hoping to capitalize on, County Executive Maggie Brooks’ FAIR Plan.
“We will give the Republicans all the trouble that they need this year. Including, but not limited to making sure Maggie Brooks and the Legislature does not take money away from those suburban schools they keep talking about, said David Gantt, (D) 133rd District.
“We know what's right for our community. Republicans stand for cutting, spending, reducing property taxes. We're doing the right things. We have a long record of good government which we want to continue,” said Brooks.
And with time running out both parties are hoping, come Tuesday, voters will make their voices heard at the polls.
