SHUTTLEMISSION2007-10-31-1193841757.jpgA large tear in one of the solar arrays generating power for the International Space Station may look worse than it is, but it still poses a challenge for NASA.

Rochester native Pam Melroy is commanding the mission. For now, the array is still collecting 97 percent of its expected energy load, but it's currently unstable and only partially deployed. The array tore while it was being extended following its relocation to the opposite end of the ISS.

Mission managers are still developing a plan of action to cope with the two-and-a-half-foot hole in the panel and with the malfunctioning joint.  A fourth spacewalk is set for Thursday.
