It’s every traveler’s nightmare, losing your luggage after a flight. What's worse? Having something stolen out of your suitcase. So how often does it happen at the Rochester airport? "We are very aware of what happens. We’re certainly very conscience of what happens to our passengers. We’re very proactive with any complaint that we receive,” said Airport Director David Damelio.
Rochester’s airport has received complaints in recent years. A Jetblue customer claimed a digital camera worth more than $1,300 was stolen in June of 2004. In October of 2005 a Delta passenger said $5,000 dollars worth of jewelry was stolen.
In all there were about 59 claims of stolen items in the past few years here. They total about $27,000 but when you compare that to other upstate airports Rochester's record is pretty good.
In Buffalo and Syracuse the statistics are a bit more alarming. There were 111 claims at Syracuse Hancock International totaling more than $82,000. Buffalo Niagara International had 171 claims valued at more than $92,000.
"It makes us feel good that we are well below both Syracuse and Buffalo and we're well below the national average,” said Damelio.
The statistics from the TSA cover the last 3 or 4 years. When they do get complaints at Rochester’s airport Damelio says they sit down with the TSA as well as the screeners to find out exactly what happened.
