Red_Sox2007-10-24-1193242019.gifAmerican League champion Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Tim Wakefield has been left off the club's roster for the World Series.

Wakefield, who was left off the ALDS roster with soreness in his back, was added to ALCS roster and pitched in a Game 4 loss in Cleveland.

According to Boston's Web site, Wakefield would have started Game 2 if healthy. Veteran Curt Schilling will now get the ball in the second game of the series while Daisuke Matsuzaka will pitch in Game 3. Manager Terry Francona has not announced a starter for Game 4 or who will replace Wakefield on the roster.

Game 1 of the World Series is set for Wednesday night at Fenway Park. Josh Beckett takes the ball for the Red Sox while Colorado sends Jeff Francis to the mound.

Wakefield, the veteran right-handed knuckleballer, finished with a 17-12 record and a 4.76 ERA in 31 starts. However, the 41-year-old hurler missed a scheduled start on August 31 with a back injury and ended the season just 1-2 in his last five starts, allowing 39 hits and 24 earned runs over his final 24 2/3 innings.
