A school crossing guard was killed in a hit and run early Tuesday morning at the corner of

Bloss Street
and
Dewey Avenue
. Police say they are doing everything they can to find the person behind the wheel of the car that hit her.

"Nobody goes to work expecting this," said Commander Mike Wood of the Rochester Police Department.

A broken stop sign marked the spot where the crossing guard was killed while helping students cross the street near School No. 30.

“You have someone out here doing a job to help children across the street, and she unfortunately lost her life in the midst of it,” Wood said. “It’s a tragedy.”

The driver of the car sped off, and the crossing guard was taken to the hospital where she later died. No one else was hurt.

Police found the car, a black Chevy Cavalier, a short time after the accident, but they did not have any immediate suspects.

“It’s wrong,” said Earline Strickland, a neighbor and grandmother in the area. “They could have stopped. It’s wrong.”

Strickland walks her grand-daughter to school every day. She’s seen that same crossing guard for at least four years.

“She was up her every morning,” Strickland said.

And Earline says the well-known crossing guard will be missed.

“A lot of kids are going to miss her because this lady’s been here for years,” she said.
