Drug that treats alcoholism?

By: WROC-TV
Updated: October 10, 2007

A drug used to treat seizures and migraines may help conquer alcoholism.

The drug Topiramate has been sold under the name Topomax for years, but scientists have discovered that it reduces the craving for a drink.

Alcoholics who took the medication had significantly fewer heavy drinking days.

And previous research has shown it can also help alcoholics who've stopped drinking stay sober.

The tests are still in the early stages, but doctors treating addiction say it holds a lot of promise.
