Lou Campanozzi , at age 33, had just been appointed as the youngest ever head of the Rochester Police Physical Crimes Unit. The April 1976 rape and murder of 7 year old Michelle McMurray marked the first major case during his stewardship over those who investigated Rochester's most heinous crimes in those days.
Unfortunately, Campanozzi who later authored several crime novels, never lived to see this day when, "the one that got away" was finally caught.
He died unexpectedly nearly 5 years to the day before the case was finally cracked.
His daughter tells us that since her dad's untimely death she has coped with her grief through her belief that he is still "somewhere up there still chasing the bad guys and trying to make things right."
