School is just days away - and that means one last shine for these school buses in Greece. But the windshields aren't the only things being cleaned up.

All 162 buses in Greece have been retrofitted with diesel oxidation catalysts and crankcase spiracle filters. So what's that mean in English???

"That'll reduce the pollution that these buses are emitting for our children on the buses, our school staff and for our community so we are doing are part to make the air clean,” says Kathleen Shero of the Greece Central School District.

A project like this cost hundreds of thousands of dollars but the best part for the Greece Central School District and the taxpayers is that it was done at no cost to them. That's because this project was paid for by a grant from the Clean Bus USA Project.

"We didn't have to pay a cent for it nor did we have to use our mechanics to do the labor," says Shero.

"Our children deserve and have the right to breathe cleaner air."

Paul Tonko is the president and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. He says so far about 2800 school buses have been upgraded...that's about half of those in the state.

"As we deal with hundreds of thousands of buses to go we will clean up this air quality and make for a stronger outcome which I think is important," says Tonko.

Greece is the largest bus fleet in the state to go green so far, with many more to follow.

School buses in Fairport as well as Livonia were also upgraded to be more environmentally friendly.
