Sam Fiori keeps a watchful eye over his sons 10-year old Tyler and 13-year old Ryan. Now he'll have even more help. “I think it's a great idea that'd give everybody a heads up of what's going on around the neighborhood so people can keep an eye out what's going on,” said Fiori. Fiori's talking about a new link on the Town of Irondequoit’s website that lists convicted sex offenders who live in the community.
“What we've done is we put the level two and level three sex offender listing on our website you can link up to it directly and basically its just o keep people informed,” said Town Supervisor Mary Ellen Heyman. Heyman says the website is just one of several measures the town takes to keep residents informed of the whereabouts of convicted sex offenders in the community. “We do a lot in Irondequoit when we have someone move in. We have our officers go to a one mile radius around their house to notify residents. We also notify the school district,” said Heyman.
Dawn Criscoulo has two daughters. She thinks the website is a great idea. “As a parent I'd like to be aware of this and to keep my children safe. I'd like to know if they're in my neighborhood or not,” said Criscuolo.
The website is updated regularly by the Irondequoit Police department. Despite efforts to keep on top of the whereabouts of convicted sex offenders this list is not comprehensive. A 2006 ruling by the US District Court for the Southern District of New York prohibits the town from listing Level one sex offenders, the lowest risk offenders.
