27 schools across the state have been identified as “persistently dangerous” under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. One of those schools is Rochester's Roberto Clemente School No. 8.
The New York State Education Department says a school is considered “persistently dangerous” if it has too many serious incidents at the school over the course of two consecutive school years. However, two other city school have been removed from that list. Jefferson High School and Charlotte High School have both been removed from the list.
Rochester's Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. William C. Cala says, "By implementing effective practices, Charlotte and Jefferson have significantly decreased problems and fostered activities that have enhanced the climate for students and staff. Students feel safe and supported, and staff are responsive to issues and concerns that often begin at home and in neighborhoods across the city."
