tim_mains2007-08-16-1187305181.jpgTim Mains says he's still choosing his words carefully until he gets a chance to speak with the public. Mains tells News 8  the early superintendent search process prohibited him from disclosing anything about his bid for the job.

News 8 asked Mains why he decided to seek the superintendent's position:

Mains says the city schools face many challenges and, after being an educator and community leader for so long, he feels he's right for the job.

However, when Mains was asked what he felt the biggest challenge is facing the district, he would not comment, preferring to leave what he calls his "plan" for the city school district under wraps until he speaks to the public.

Mains says he hopes to get more than one opportunity to talk with residents.

“It's very important to me that this process not only need  to be open to the public but I believe there needs to be more than one single session. I don't want it to be limited to one opportunity, I think there needs to be a couple. But, I would like it to happen as soon as it possibly can,” says Mains.

Mains is a former city council member and in 2005, made an unsuccessful bid for mayor. Mains is currently the principal at school #50 in the City of Rochester.

The other finalist, Dr. Carlinda Purcell, is also now allowed to speak publicly.  Purcell is a former superintendent in Montgomery, Alabama. Purcell was forced to resign after disagreements with the board of education. Dr. Purcell is scheduled to be in Rochester Friday to interview with the school board. The RCSD school board is also planning an open forum with both candidates.
