25-year old Melissa Johns' car caught fire when it was in motion just after five o'clock. She was driving west on I-86 near Corning between extis 42 and 43.
Police say she pulled to the side of the road to try and get her children out of the rear seat. That's when the car became engulfed in flames. Her children 18-month old Isabella and four week old Sinaya were killed.
Police and firefighters are investigating to see how the fire started. The westbound lanes of I-86 were closed for about three hours.
