Durand Eastman Beach more popular this year

DURANDBEACHUPDATE2007-07-30-1185836256.jpgA lot more people are choosing to spend these hot summer days at Durand Eastman Beach. About 25,000 people have used the beach this summer, more than twice the number that used it last year.


The beach had been closed for decades. It opened in late summer last year, but bacteria problems sporadically closed the beach. This year, it's a different story.


"Quite a lot of people, more people in our area and that makes me really happy, especially the kids.  The kids really need to be here...the parents can't be watching them all the time," says Lt. Lifeguard Hanna Bergwal.


The beach has only been closed 7 times this summer because of bacteria problems.


New grills, picnic benches and trash barrels are being ordered for next summer.
