It's a stretch of road that makes for white-knuckle driving in Penfield. This is what it looks like if you're trying to make a left turn from Jackson Road to Atlantic Avenue, near the Town Hall. To your right, you don't have a lot of visibility. Today, we counted how long it takes cars to go from the top of the incline to the intersection. Average time... About five seconds. It's not a lot of time to make a decision and a lot of drivers make a bad one.
This particular intersection has four times the accidents than the state average. Now the town's doing something about it.
Here's a look at the intersection. Atlantic Ave... Route 286, to the east of the intersection, will be graded down so that will improve visibility by about 100 feet. A traffic light at the intersection is pending approval.
This construction project begins August first. That stretch of road is traveled by about 7,000 cars a day.
